An exquisite nude figure stands expectantly in front of the window. Historically, the Sphinx was a female monster with the body of a lion, the head and breast of a woman, eagle’s wings and a serpent’s tail. The ancient Egyptians built the Sphinx to guard important areas, such as tombs of the royalty. In this painting, she looks out the window, perhaps with a private smile, guarding only her secrets.
